Chapter 19
I must have fallen asleep at one point because I woke up in Liamâs arms as he carried me to bed. I wanted to demand he put me down but I was too tired. He didnât say anything, just helped me slide into bed and walked back out the door. When I opened my eyes again it was morning, the sun streaming through the windows. I hadnât closed the curtains last night and apparently neither did he. I spent a long time trying to cover my eyes and go back to sleep but eventually I forced myself awake. I did my morning routine, deciding to shower instead of indulge in the tub since I was starting to get hungry.
By the time I went downstairs, the house was bustling. Teams of security guards streamed in and out of the house, the door wide open. Even in my jeans and long sleeve shirt, I shivered, hustling to the kitchen to avoid the wind. There were a couple guys hanging out at the table, talking about different plans of attack. One guy glared at me, which was weird, but they mostly just ignored me. I climbed onto a stool by the island, resting my head against the marble.
âYou look like you could use a coffee.â
Andre was in his element, bustling around his kitchen. He had something boiling on the stove and was pulling pastries out of the oven. I lifted my head, giving him a weak smile before dropping back down. I donât normally need caffeine, it was more of a treat than a necessity, but I hadnât been sleeping well the last few nights. I woke up a lot and didnât feel rested in the morning.
âCream or sugar?â
âBoth, please.â
He nodded, placing a steaming mug in front of me as well as a little plate with the cream and sugar. He turned back to the stove, stirring whatever he was cooking but he grinned over his shoulder when I groaned at my first sip.
âMr. OâConnor doesnât function well without coffee so I always try to get the best. It makes him more agreeable with his colleagues.â I raised an eyebrow at the word âcolleaguesâ but he ignored me, pushing a small plate with a scone in front of me. âEat, itâll help you wake up.â Andre walked away, disappearing into the pantry.
âSpoiled brat.â My shoulders stiffened. It sounded like it came from one of the guys sitting at the table. I would bet good money it was the guy who was glaring at me before. Whatâs his problem?
âGot something to say, Mike?â James had just entered the room, his body seeming to radiate fury.
âYeah, she does one thing and sheâs living in the lap of luxury. We work hard every day and what do we get for it? It's lucky for her the boss likes her pussy.â
I could feel the heat run up my neck at that comment, my head dropping, but I didnât get a chance to even turn to look at the guy before James spoke again.
